A few years back I came across the knowledge of March being Pastor’s Wife Appreciation month. I know that many churches will celebrate both in the month of October, but for just a moment I would like to highlight my wife. As most know the only time I bring her up in a message is for a funny laugh, a little illustration, or just to poke at her. Truthfully, I couldn’t be the pastor I am without her. Church wouldn’t be the same without her, and I know the music wouldn’t be as good without her. I know that people believe I carry a lot of burdens, but most of the ones I carry she does too. She does it all with a smile on her face. I know we may joke with her (mic check?) but I am very thankful she is the first lady of Little Union Baptist Church!
What is the role of a pastor’s wife? You can search the scriptures but you will never find it. Most of the churches demands of a pastor’s wife is unobtainable. She doesn’t have to play an instrument, she doesn’t have to sing, she doesn’t have to teach, she doesn’t have to be a head of a committee, and she doesn’t have to be at the beckoning call of the church. The joy in it though is when a pastor’s wife is willing to do these things. I am thankful for my wife that wants to serve along beside me. It isn’t a duty that is required, but what a joy it is when it is recognized.
This year I pray you take a moment to appreciate her. Often the Pastor’s wife is overlooked, and much praise is given to the pastor. A lot of things that you are thankful for about me are probably due to her. So, share with her a song that you like her singing, a memory you are thankful for, what you appreciate about her, and I promise it wont go unnoticed. (P.S. she really likes it in written form so she can always go back and read it.) We love you church, and we are thankful that you continue to choose us to be your Pastor and First Lady!
